Men's Preview       San Bernardino looks set for another banner year, but other teams are gunning for them

A pack of blue shirts was a horrifying sight for many teams in 2009. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

San Bernardino Valley (1st So Cal Champs, 1st State Champs) - If anyone is going to derail this train, it is going to be a monumental task. SBVC has been the dominant men’s program of the last decade and they look well on their way to becoming the dominant program of this one. During 2009, there was a lot of discussion on which team may take the title, that discussion ended at the Southern California Championships with one of the more memorable packing demonstrations in recent history. What was so remarkable about last year’s team is they obliterated the competition and did it without one athlete finishing in the top ten of either the So Cal or State Championships. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when you have all five of your scoring athletes finishing in the top 20. This year, there is no sign that SBVC will be letting up. While they lose Art Parra who placed 11th overall, Raymond Dominguez (12th), Travis Nemchick (14th), Sam Sanchez (18th), and Martin Sanchez (33rd) all return. Which means this is going to be a complete nightmare for any other team to deal with in trying to take over the top spot from them.

Sergio Olivarrias will be one of a few key departures that the Pirates will have to try and fill. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Orange Coast (2nd So Cal Champs, 2nd State Champs) - The Pirates had one of their strongest men’s teams to date, unfortunately for them, they, like everyone else, had to come along at the same time when San Bernardino Valley was at the top of it’s game. Yet, the Pirates performed valiantly, finishing 2nd overall. However, just like their women’s team, OCC will have a tremendous amount to replace. OCC loses three of their top five including top runner, Russell Westphal and other standouts, Pedro Saucedo and Segio Olivarrias. Yet, the Pirates still have some outstanding returners, including Eric Dyson, who placed 24th overall and Jake Dawson who placed 44th. Also returning will be Michael Taylor, who was a state finalist in the 10,000 meters in track. If OCC can get a few athletes to move up, they could put themselves in position to make another run at the top three.

Glendale will have a lot to replace in Quijada and Alpizar. (photo, courtesy of Kirby Lee)

Glendale (3rd So Cal Champs, 3rd State Champs) - After suffering some early departures in the 2009, many thought Glendale may not be a factor. However, those sentiments were proven wrong. This was mainly due to the big time performances turned in by top athlete, Francisco Quijada, who placed 6th overall. Glendale also received an outstanding state run by sophomore Johnathan Alpizar. Yet, Glendale will find themselves in a position of having to replace those two excellent athletes as they move on. Also gone from that team is there number four finisher, Francis Herrera. This leaves only Rico Gutierrez who placed 36th and Ricky Avila who placed 77th from their top five from 2009. After that, the points really pile up with their next finisher placing 161st overall. Glendale has proven to be able to bring in talent when they needed it and this next year they will have to do just that if they want to maintain their status near the top of the heap.

David Cardona will be one of the early favorites to take the individual title and is part of maybe the most intimidating combination in the state. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren).

El Camino (5th So Cal Champs, 6th State Champs) - El Camino, probably without a doubt, has the best 1-2 combination in the state and the good news for them is both parts of that combination, David Cardona and Jose Lezama will be donning the blue and white again this year. Cardona, placed 2nd and Lezama placed 15th overall at the 2009 championships. Cardona, would certainly have to be one of the favorites to take it this year and after the great track season that Lezama had, many may feel that he has the chance to challenge his teammate. Any time you have two athletes that can place in the top five, you would have to be considered a major threat. What El Camino needs to do is put some athletes closer to the mid 30 place range in order to make a run at the title. Last year, their third finisher, Jimi Duffin, placed 78th. If El Camino can move him up, or if they can bring in some athletes to fill the hole between their 2nd and 3rd man, look out.

Sean Whitesitt will be one of the runners the Mounties will need to replace in 2010. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Mt. SAC (4th So Cal Champs, 7th State Champs) - The Mounties placed 7th as a team last season, a strong finish, despite losing some of their top athletes from the previous year. The Mounties lacked a front runner with their top finisher, Gustavo Cruz, placing 37th overall. But what they did do well is pack their 1, 2 and 3 runners. Unfortunately for the Mounties, two of those three will be gone as Cruz and Sean Whitesitt graduate, leaving Chris Rivera as their top returner. After that, their gap becomes considerable as their next finisher, Adrian Diaz finished 86th. Mt. SAC is definitely going to need to replenish near the front of their line-up and possibly gain a front runner in order to challenge for a top five finish.

Jason Zapien (far left) and Gabriel Hilbert (background) will carry the Falcon hopes in 2010. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Cerritos (6th So Cal Champs, 10th State Champs) - The Falcons represented another South Coast Conference team, which made up three of the top six southern finishing teams at the state championships. Cerritos had a nice mix between sophomores and freshmen last season, but lacked a true front runner with their highest finisher, Patrick Schwab, placing 32nd overall. Schwab is gone and so is Torion Bailey, Angel Aguirre and Johnathan Martinez, taking a big chunk out of the Cerritos’ line-up. However, back is Gabriel Hilbert, who placed 55th overall but showed dramatic improvement in track, winning the state title in the 1500 and then running a 1:50.8 800 at the Junior Nationals. Jason Zapien, who was inconsistent, but showed signs of having big potential is also back. If Hilbert and Zapien can move up and Cerritos can add to their group with solid freshmen, they may be able to make a move. However, there is still a lot of “if’s” here.

Miguel Reyes showed a lot of promise in 2009 and will be the top returner for Ventura. (photo, courtesy of Mark Covert)

Ventura (8th So Cal Champs, 11th State Champs) - Ventura placed 11th overall at state. This was largely due to the 8th place finish of outstanding runner, Marc Martinez. With that high a placing, it helped VC keep its team total low. There was a gap between their 1st and 2nd runner, Miguel Reyes (44th). Yet, Reyes showed promise all through last year and should be able to move up this year, which he will need to do since Martinez is departing. After that, Ventura will need to shore up it’s 3rd, 4th and 5th positions as only one other runner from last year’s squad was able to crack the top 100.

Jeff Pelarde was the big gun for the Tigers last year, and will leave big shoes to fill in 2010. (photo, courtesy of Kirby Lee)

Riverside (7th So Cal Champs, 12th State Champs) - Riverside started off the year very well, but seemed to fade a little as the season progressed towards the championship meets, eventually settling for the 12th spot at the state championships. Much of their hopes rested on Jeff Pelarde, who had a masterful season and finished 3rd overall at the state meet. However, after Pelarde finished, there was quite some time before another Tiger crossed the line, which was Jesse Dorado, over a minute later. With Pelarde graduating, Dorado and Jeff Blakely (80th) will have to pick up the considerable slack left by Pelarde’s absence. After that, there was not another Tiger runner to crack the top 110 finishers mark. Riverside has always been able to restock. If history proves correct, it would be a good bet that this team will be back in the mix in 2010.

Ulises Aquino could help make AVC a team to watch this season. (photo, courtesy of Mark Covert)

Antelope Valley(13th So Cal Champs, 14th State Champs) - AVC had a solid season with what was a very young team. Ulises and Uriel Aquino had very good rookie campaigns and with the emergence of Pedro Zaragosa during track season, Antelope Valley looks like they are on the verge of making a major move this year. All three runners cracked the top 70 with Ulises Aquino finishing a very respectable 26th place. If AVC can add to the number 4 and 5 spots on their team, this could be a very dangerous team that could threaten to move up very high in the rankings in 2010.

Dahir Mohammed is the defending So Cal Champ and will most likely be a top pick to win state this season. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

Southwestern (11th So Cal Champs, 15th State Champs) - The team from deep south grabbed the 15th spot at last years state championships. Running behind the spectacular efforts of Dahir Mohammed, who placed 5th overall, and the solid running of Edgar Lopez, who placed 26th, SW was able to crack the top 15. Although, Mohammed will be back, giving Southwestern a definite contender to take the individual title, Lopez moves on. With Lopez gone, a massive divide between their number 1 and 2 runner exists, with their next fastest athlete not cracking the top 125. It is obvious, that SW has some major shore-up work to do if they are going to have a chance of sniffing that top ten.

Other teams to watch

Nick Bredosian, placed in the top 60 at state last year and looks to improve in 2010. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Cuyamaca (10th So Cal Champs, 18th State Champs) - Although lacking a frontrunner, Cuyamaca did manage to have their top three runners finish in the top 100 of the state meet. They will be led by Nick Bedrosian and Jesse Beason, both of whom placed in the top 60. With improvement from their top two returners and the addition of some new blood that contributes, Cuyamaca, has a definite shot to move into the top ten.

Mason Westphal (340), seen here at the state meet, will be one of handful of returners for San Diego Mesa. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

San Diego Mesa (9th So Cal Champs, 19th State Champs) - Mesa had a very uncharacteristic year as they slid to the 19th finishing spot after finishing 2nd the two previous years. It would probably be a good bet that this team will bounce back. Justin Arnold is their top returning athlete, placing 60th overall. SDM has always been a force, but they do have a lot of work to do to regain their winning form.

Early Season Pick - San Bernardino Valley

Athletes to Watch - David Cardona, El Camino; Jose Lezama, El Camino; Dahir Mohammed, Southwestern; Gabriel Hilbert, Cerritos; Raymond Dominguez, San Bernardino Valley; Ulises Aquino, Antelope Valley; Eric Dyson, Orange Coast;  Pedro De Alba, LA Trade Tech

     Women's Preview

Changes may be on the horizon as women gear up for 2010

It’s that time again, we are only a few weeks away from that fall tradition, the opening of the college cross country season. Of course, along with that tradition, comes gocollegetrack.com’s annual preview of the upcoming year.

In looking at the 2010 season, the women’s and men’s competition can be seen very differently. On the women’s side, there are some changes to the defending champion Glendale team. Glendale, who has been the dominant women’s program over the last three years, will lose some key components to their line-up, which begs the question, will a new champion emerge or will traditional powers step up to challenge for state supremacy?

On the men’s side, the question is, can anyone step up to derail the runaway freight train that is San Bernardino Valley? SBVC’s streak now stands at 3, and with a strong group returning, can they be taken down or will they continue this amazing run?

Then the eternal question that everyone asks which can not be answered until season begins, “What incoming freshman are ready to make an impact”? Although this preview is hardly the final word on what a team might or might not accomplish, it may be able to give us some ideas of the talent a team has returning and how that might affect their chances during the season.

Brianna Jauregui (center) seen here with teammate Nina Moore and SCC XC Champ Lenore Moreno (282), will be a key component to Glendale’s chances in 2010. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

Glendale (1st So Cal Champs, 1st State Champs) - After winning three Southern California championships, two state championships and a state runner-up award in the last three years, Glendale has established itself as the top women’s program in the state. For those past three years, they have relied on a combination of experienced returners and outstanding freshman to attain their status and most likely, this year, they will rely on that same formula to attain that same level of success. Yet, that does not mean that there will not be some challenges for them along the way. Gone is defending state champion Nina Moore, who has taken her talents to Long Beach State. Also departing is state 1500 meter champion, Rosa Del Toro and Angelina Gonzalez who placed 24th overall at the state meet. However, Glendale does have some solid athletes back, most notably, Karen Rosas, who placed 7th overall. Vivian Ochoa, who placed 15th at the state championships will return as well as Brianna Jauregui who took 19th, only a few seconds back of her teammate. Jessica Wenses, who placed 20th overall will also be back, but after a long hiatus, skipping this past track season, it will be interesting to see if she can respond at the same level she did last year. Glendale certainly will have some quality sophomores, and Rosas gives them a true front runner. If Glendale can reload in the 4th and 5th spots, they have a very good chance to make another run at it. In the past, they have proven that they can restock talent, and this year, they don‘t have too far to go to return to that level.

Kimone Hewitt will leave some big shoes to fill as OCC looks for another front runner this year. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

Orange Coast (2nd So Cal Champs, 2nd State Champs) - Although the Pirates have been supplanted by Glendale as the top women’s team, they have always been in the mix. The traditional power has not finished further back then second place over the last several years, and that in combination with their many championships, always makes them a team to watch. Yet, this year, OCC will have to face many key losses, much more so than their Western States Conference rival, Glendale. Having to replace a large portion of last seasons powerful roster on a much larger scale, the Lady Pirates are faced with a difficult task. Front-runner Kimone Hewitt, who placed 3rd overall departs, as well as Hillary Labelle, who took 16th overall. Jane Kerner, who placed 22nd overall is also leaving, effectively removing their top three finishers from 2009 state meet. Other departures include outstanding runners Maggie McDuffee and Andrea Guerra. In all, five of the Pirates top seven move on. This will leave Andrea Jacob-Gayton and Sara Toberty, who finished 23 and 28th respectively, carrying a large part of the experience for OCC in 2010. Toberty, who showed tremendous improvement in track, may be the one to look at to take over front running duties this year. She had a great deal of success in the 1500, which will be interesting to see how that translates to improvement in cross country. Word has it that OCC has another large recruiting class. If the numbers speak volumes, they should be able to find more talent in their new recruits.

Jaasmin Pina (center), seen here at 2010 State Track Championships, will be an outstanding addition to the Mountie cross country team. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

Mt. SAC (3rd So Cal Champs, 3rd State Champs) - The Lady Mounties, had an outstanding season in 2009 with a very strong 3rd place finish, narrowly losing to Orange Coast by a scant 12 points. They were led by superstar, Lenore Moreno, who placed 5th overall. Moreno is gone, however, Mt. SAC returns a large portion of it’s team and could be the favorite coming into the 2010 season. Yet, along with Moreno, there are some other big losses for Mt. SAC, including Mallory Celaya, who placed 8th overall. However, the Mounties are going to add outstanding red-shirt runner, Jaasmin Pina, who had an “All State” caliber track season, to the mix. Her addition will definitely help soften the blow of losing Moreno and Celaya. Along with Pina, Jazmin Lopez who took 13th overall and Evelyne Ruiz, who took 32nd gives the Mounties a very strong outlook for the upcoming campaign and may make them the team to beat. Mt. SAC’s recruiting classes are generally strong. They do not need to add many pieces in order to be a state title contender. This may be the year that the Mounties take down the top team and reclaim a title they last won in 2000.

Larissa Davis, will be missed by the Lady Tigers. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Riverside (5th So Cal Champs, 4th State Champs) - The lady Tigers have been a mainstay near the top of the state standings for the last several years and in 2009, they maintained that status with a 4th place finish. Although, lacking a frontrunner at the state championships, their ability to pack, placing several runners in the top 35, was good enough to land them in a top five team position. Riverside does experience some losses, including their top two finishers, Katherine Gomez who took 17th and Brenda Perez who placed 27th respectively. They will also lose their standout, Larissa Davis. Riverside, however, does return Adrianna Davidek and Casey Candelaria, both of whom placed in the top 30 as well as Ashley Perryman who placed 44th overall. Yet, if the Tigers are to challenge for those top three spots, they are most likely going to have to find a front runner to move into the top 20 to give them a fighting chance against the likes of Mt. SAC, OCC and Glendale.  This could happen with some of their returners.  Without that front runner, the Tigers will be giving up a lot of front end points, which will make it very difficult to have a shot at the title.

The departure of Maritza Hernandez will leave a big void in the LA Trade Tech line-up that they will need to fill to keep themselves in a top spot. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

LA Trade Tech (6th So Cal Champs, 6th State Champs) - LATT had one of its highest finishes in the last few years with a 6th place overall team standing. They accomplished this largely on the back of their star runner, the departing Maritza Hernandez, who garnered an 11th place finish. However, after Hernandez, the points piled up fast, with their next runner, Liliana Mercado, finishing in the 50th position. After that, Carla Ponce placed 79th, Viginia Perez was 95th and Cynthia Berrera was 104th. Ponce, Perez and Berrera will return along with Jeanette Ortiz, who was one of their top runners earlier in the season but sat out at the state meet. The wild card that LATT may have to play is Danielle Low. Low, who had a break out season in track, garnering “All State” honors in the 800, could be a significant addition. If Trade Tech wants to be a factor in 2010, they will have to close some of those substantial gaps between their athletes and possibly get another runner to step up to Hernandez’s level. Their core is fairly solid, but will have to move up as a pack to become a threat.

Kelly Barmann should be a major player this season and will be a factor in helping Cuesta reach greater heights. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Cuesta (7th So Cal Champs, 8th State Champs) - Like LA Trade Tech, Cuesta was largely dependant on their high finish from the efforts of their outstanding freshman, Kelly Barmann, who took 2nd overall. Yet, unlike LATT, they will have the services of their star front runner for another season, as Barmann returns for her sophomore campaign. Yet, Cuesta does have some needs, the major one being to close some of the large gaps between their front runner and their next highest finisher, which in 2009, was Paige Petersen, who took 57th overall. Petersen does return, however, their third finisher, Jennifer Love does not. With a big gun like Barmann, Cuesta will have the opportunity to do some damage, but they will need to work on getting athletes to help Barmann out, trimming some of the points off their teams total score.

Taylor Goto (right) was a pleasant surprise for the Hornets and could be a big factor in 2010. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Fullerton (13th So Cal Champs, 11th State Champs) - The Hornets had a solid season in 2009 placing 11th overall at the state championships. Although, they were not a threat to place in the top five, they did show elements of having a strong core coming back, that if combined with a frontrunner, may give them a shot at a position like that this year. Led by freshman, Taylor Goto, who placed 48th, Fullerton also returns Samantha Gastelum (61st) and Leslie Gomez (82nd) to the mix as well. If Fullerton can develop or add a runner to move into a top 20 position in combination with better pack development, they may be able to challenge for a higher team placing.

Teffany Gonzalez, seen here leading a pack of Mounties, was one of the top runners in the state in 2009, and will be a difficult runner to replace for Ventura. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Ventura (12th So Cal Champs, 12th State Champs) - Ventura finished in the 12th position last year, however, did that largely on the strength of their number one runner, Tefany Gonzalez who placed 12th at the state meet. Stephanie Ramirez, was the next closest runner, placing 69th overall. The bad news for VC is both those athletes are moving on. They will have a lot of work to do in 2010, as their next returning athlete did not finish in the top 130 of last years meet.

Sara Taylor led a surprising Victor Valley team that could make some major noise this year. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Victor Valley (11th So Cal Champs, 12th State Champs) - One of the surprises of the 2009 campaign was the emergence of Victor Valley. The desert team showcased a nice group of runners that propelled them to a 13th place finish. What also bodes well for them is their top two runners, Sara Taylor who placed 40th and Joanna Cervantes, who placed 66th are both returning. They showed quite a bit of improvement over the course of the year. If they can continue to show that same improvement and if VVC can add a couple of runners to fill in the gaps, this could be a team that could make some noise in the 2010 season.

Michelle Thompson, seen here at the So Cal Championships, was the top women for the San Diego Mesa team in 2009. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

San Diego Mesa (10th So Cal Champs, 14th State Champs) - The deep south team of San Diego Mesa, showed some promise in 2009. They were led by Michelle Thompson who placed 21st overall at the state championships. While losing Thompson to graduation might seem like a devastating blow on the surface, SDM does have some interesting returners that could keep them in the mix for this year. Suzanne Cornwell, who placed 39th overall could be a major contributor as she only ran a few races during 2009 and could show major improvement in 2010. Kristina Schneider, also saw limited action last year, and placed 105th overall. If San Diego Mesa can get consistency from this years sophomore group, as well as add some athletes that shore up the gap between their 3rd and 4th runner, Mesa may be a top ten contender or even better.

Tracee Van Der Wyk, seen here battling Rosa Del Toro of Glendale in the 1500 at the State Track Championships, will be one of the favorites to take the individual title this year. (photo, courtesy of Dean Lofgren)

Pasadena (17th So Cal Champs, 15th State Champs) - Pasadena was mainly about one runner last year, Tracee Van Der Wyk. Van Der Wyk was a force to be reckoned with all last season, and charged to a 4th place finish at last years state championships. She is also what makes Pasadena very dangerous for this year. Having an athlete that can place in the top five gives a team a major advantage as they prepare for their next campaign and Pasadena certainly has that piece in place. The bad news for Pasadena is that they have some sizable holes to fill as their next runner, Lidia Garcia, finished 74 places back of Van Der Wyk in the 78th position. Garcia does return, but the points will continue to pile up if they don’t get their pack to move up.

Other teams to watch

Melissa Byrd (8) and Sandra Flores will be key factors in helping Cerritos bounce back after a tough 2009. (photo, courtesy of John Goldman)

Cerritos (9th So Cal Champs, 16th State Champs) - The Falcons have been a mainstay near the top of the state standings finishing in the top seven six consecutive years including three top five finishes in the last six years. It looked as if they would continue that streak in 2009 as they finished near the top of most invitationals that they competed in last season. Yet, three key injuries took their toll and without the depth they had in previous seasons, they could not recover as they dropped to 16th. This year, Cerritos looks to rebound as a healthy Melissa Byrd returns as well as Sandra Flores who finished 88th and a much improved Cassie Mejia.  However, if the Falcons want to return to previous levels, they are going to need to get their pack to move up a great deal from 2009 levels.

Caitlin Choate (39) and Anaiz Ortiz (far right) will give AVC a boost in 2010. (photo, courtesy of Mark Covert)

Antelope Valley (16th So Cal Champs, 17th State Champs) - AVC has a very interesting team returning, including two very solid runners in Anaiz Ortiz who finished 34th overall and Caitlin Choate who placed 80th. Both runners continued to improve over cross country season and it is not hard to imagine both of those athletes moving up. If Ortiz can move into the rarified air of the top 20, and Choate continues to improve, it is not inconceivable that this team could be a significant factor come state championship time.

Oxnard will have several runners back from the 2009 team that showed promise. (photo, courtesy of Mark Covert)

Oxnard (14th So Cal Champs, 19th State Champs) - Although many people did not notice, Oxnard had a three runners finish in the top 70, including one, Cynthia Navarro who claimed the 25th spot. Where Oxnard took punishment was in the number four and five spots where they placed 174th and 180th overall, effectively removing them from a chance to place in the top ten. However, if those spots could be improved upon and they are able to maintain their front spots, this team has the strength to place in the top ten and maybe top seven.

Tanya Valenzuela gives Southwestern a legitimate front runner in 2010. (photo, courtesy of Kevin Vidana-Barda)

Southwestern (4th place So Cal, did not place at State Champs) - Southwestern has been one of the top programs in the state over the last several years, finishing in the top five several times, including a 3rd place finish in 2008.  It looked as if they would be ready to make another run at a top three position in 2009. Yet, SW, after placing 4th at So Cal, did not field a full team in the state meet and therefore, did not place. That does not mean that SW will be out of it this year. All of their top runners are back from last season, including Tanya Valenzuela, who placed 14th overall, Nadine Mulvany who took 18th overall and Bianca Maela who took 40th. With 3 runners back who were in the top 40 including two in the top 20, SW will not need much to be a contender again.

Early Season Pick - Mt. SAC

Athletes to Watch - Sara Toberty, Orange Coast; Jassmin Pina, Mt. SAC; Kelly Barmann, Cuesta; Tracee Van Der Wyk, Pasadena; Vivian Ochoa, Glendale; Corey Honeycutt, College of the Canyons; Tanya Valenzuela, Southwestern
