THE CERRITOS WOMEN AND THE RIVERSIDE MEN LIVE UP TO THEIR BILLING!!!

 5/17/08

The California Community College State Championships held at Cerritos College this weekend had performances every bit as hot as the over 90 degree weather.

In the women's competition, the Cerritos team and West LA, as they did in Southern California Championships, waged a very tight battle all day long.  Northern California's top women's team, Laney, also made it more interesting as well as their performances impacted the final results.

As expected, the stars shined.  Ebony Collins, picking up right where she left off at the SO Cal Championships, had another amazing meet.  Tove Berg of Glendale finished her community college career with two more individual titles and Jessica Barfield of Cerritos saved her best jumps for the final meet of the year.

As the team competition continued however, Cerritos College through the strength of its throwers, jumpers and distance crew were able to maintain a balanced team performance, which was good enough to earn them their second state title in three years.

On the men's side, Riverside rolled to one of the most impressive team titles in recent memory.  Almost doubling the total of the second place team, Sacramento, Riverside demonstrated strength in almost every facet of the meet, especially in the sprints, hurdles and jumps.

The stars of the meet included San Diego Mesa distance specialist, Daniel Gonia, who took home two first place medals.  Riverside's Ennis Jones, took the 400 meter title home and Long Beach City's Vannie Prudhomme took the 110 hurdles as well as placing 2nd in the high jump.

The Cerritos Women and the Riverside Men Live up to Their #1 Rankings at So Cal!!!  5/10/08

The Southern California Track & Field Championships were contested this weekend at Bakersfield College and they did not disappoint in the level of top performances that were turned in by the best that So Cal has to offer.

The favorites going into the team competition of the So Cal Championships were the Cerritos College women and the Riverside men as they carried number rankings into the contest.  However, even with their number one rankings, they were not without their challenges as great performances were turned in by athletes from across the Southland as they went after team and individual glory.

In the women's events, Glendale's Tove Berg, after winning the 10,000 meters a week earlier, came back and won the 5000 meters, defeating her teammate Viven Wadeck and outstanding OCC runner, Crystal Reed.

In the throws, Cerritos' Whitney Ashley and Rachel Butler led a Falcon contingent that dominated the throws winning the discus and javelin events.

However, without a doubt, the dominate athlete of the meet was West LA's Ebony Collins, who won an incredible five individual events as well as being a part of the winning 4 x 100 relay.  Collins won the 100, 200, 100 hurdles, 400 intermediate hurdles and the long jump, scoring an astounding 52.5 points

Yet, even with Collins' heroics, the dominance of the Cerritos throwers, as well as strong contributions by their distance squad was too much, as Cerritos went onto the team victory.

On the men's side, Long Beach City's Bryan Braman won the javelin with a fantastic throw of 214'.  He also placed 7th in the high jump with a 6' 7" effort, and placed 4th in the Long Jump.  Long Beach also received an outstanding performance by Vannie Prudhomme as he took the 110 high hurdles and placed 2nd in the high jump.

The outstanding sprinter of the meet was Southwestern's Curtis Mitchell who took both the 100 and 200 meter events.

The distances saw more of mix of athletes.  Daniel Clifford-Sorenson easily won the men's steeplechase.  El Camino's Steven Calise won the 1500 and Rio Hondo's Ulises Lorenzo took the 800 meters.  Perhaps the distance runner of the meet would be San Diego Mesa's Daniel Gonia who was the only distance double winner, taking the 5000 meters a week after winning the 10,000 meters.

In the throws, Moorpark continued to dominate, with victories by Colin Dunbar in the hammer and Jimmie Pacifico in the men's shot put with a winning throw of 54' 11".

Yet, Riverside went on to an easy victory as they demonstrated depth in almost every facet of the meet.  In the men's long jump, Riverside went 1-2 with the victory going to David GirtenRiverside was dominate in the relays as they swept both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 events.

They also scored numerous points in the 100 and 200 meters led by sprinters David Girten, Duke Greer and Daniel Auberry.  With this type of consistency, Riverside proved impossible to match as they won the men's competition by over 70 points.
