Over reaction … The 1928 Amsterdam (Holland) Olympics was the first Games where women competed in track and field events. However, after the 800-meter race several women collapsed and officials determined that the distance was too hard…so there was no Olympic race longer than 200-meters for the women for 32 years (1960 Rome Olympics).

“ During the annual running of the 30k race organized by Students Run LA, one of my brother’s runners had almost given up after the first 9.3 mile loop. At the 9-mile mark there was a station where volunteers were supplying runners with power gels, Gatorade, and water. The novice runner grabbed a couple of power gels and Gatorade. After a few minutes he found his second wind and decided to finish the last 9.3 loop. When he found our group he was all excited and told us that the power gels he used on his legs had helped him with the soreness on his muscles and gave his legs more strength to finish the race, but it had left them all sticky. It took us a while to recover from this unthinkable anecdote and explained to the student that he was supposed to eat the power gels instead of rubbing them on his legs. He then explained to us that he had confused the gels with Ben Gay lotion, but at least it worked psychologically.”
