A free spirited sprinter… In the mid 70’s, I had a fine sprinter at Moorpark in Frank Jackson (later a coach at Ventura CC). We were at the SoCal Finals at Chaffey College. I had given Frank my pre-meet talk and he was ready to GO AFTER IT. As the sprinters stood behind their blocks for the start of the 100, an individual darted from the background and jumped into one of the blocks. He raised and ran the 100 all by himself. It was hard to make him out until he got to about the 50. YES! He was a streaker. He had good form and finished strongly and kept on trucking. The crowd roared with laughter.

Don’t forget to sign in… During summer workouts we occasionally would drive over to Mt. Wilson, near Sierra Madre and Pasadena, for some serious incline. When Jorge, a classmate, and I started the trail I naively asked, “Do you know why we have to sign in?” (a visitors log book sits on a post at the trail-head in Sierra Madre). He just shot me a sarcastic glance.
After about 20 minutes of straight–up running we were ready to return down the mountain to the van. As we were about to turn around Jorge stopped dead in his tracks. I tumbled into him and he whispered, “Don’t move.”
     “Why not? I asked.
“There is a mountain lion on the ledge above us.”
We waited for what seemed forever, but what was more realistically five minutes. The mountain lion did not move.  We walked slowly away until he was out of sight and then sprinted as if it was an Olympic race down the mountain. When we reached the bottom, completely breathless, Jorge turned to me and gasped, “That’s why we sign in!”
