    ’68 Olympian, NCAA All-American, national JC marks,  

             left Mt. SAC with 11 of top JC all-time 400/440 IH times

 

Olympics: The high point of Vanderstock’s career was qualifying for the 1968 USA Olympic team.  He qualified with a then world record time of 48.8.  He then finished fourth in the Mexico Games in 49.0 (same time as the second and third places).  In that race, Britain's David Hemery broke the world record, winning it with a time of 48.1.  The race was the fastest 400 IH from top to bottom in history.

Mt. SAC: As a freshman in 1965 Vanderstock joined teammates Bob Seagren, Brian Johnson, and Don Shy to set a national JC shuttle hurdle record of 53.7. He was also the 1966 state champion in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles-37.3, a time he also ran the week before in winning the So Cal title. Vanderstock set national cc records in both the 440-yard intermediates-51.2, and at 400-meters-50.0. His best 330-yard intermediate time was 35.7. 

JC Rankings: Vanderstock left Mt. SAC with 11 of the top 12 JC times of all-time in the 440/400 intermediate races. 

USC: Vanderstock took third place in both the 1967 and 1968 NCAA IH races. He is currently ranked fourth on USC’s all-time intermediate hurdle list.

Post-running career: After his running career ended Jeff worked as a stunt actor in the movie industry.

A running history of the relay’s community college stars 

     Mt. SAC Coach Hilmer Lodge initiated the first Mt. SAC Relays in ’59 (a one day meet ) and Rink Babka (Menlo CC/USC) throws discus 189-4 for victory …Dennis Johnson (Jamaica/Bakersfield CC/San Jose State) runs 9.2 wind-aided 100-yards to win in ’61- Babka wins discus again, but with a throw of  194-7 ½”… ’65 is Mt. SAC’s time to shine- Bob Seagren (Mt. SAC/USC) vaults 16-0 for a national cc record and Don Shy (Mt. SAC/ San Diego State) wins the high hurdles in 13.7 wind-aided, Shy is voted Track Athlete of the Relays …

In ’69 Frank Covelli (Cerritos CC/Arizona State) wins the second of his three Mt. SAC javelin titles with a 272-2… In ’70 Lee Evans (San Jose CC/San Jose State) wins intermediate hurdles  in 50.5 and 52-minutes later wins the 440 in 46.7….same year Seagren (Mt. SAC/USC) returns to vault 17-7 ½” to tie stadium record …in ’73 Stan Whitley (Hancock CC/Kansas) jumps 26-5 ½” to win LJ and

                                  

Kate Schmidt (Long Beach CC/Long Beach St.) sets an American record in the javelin at 184-5…in ’75 and ’77 John Powell  (American River CC/San Jose State) takes the discus (210-2 in ’77)… in ’76, Olympic year, Reynaldo Brown win his 8th Relays high jump title with a 7-3 jump and Mac Wilkins sets a discus world record with 15 throwers over 185-0  … in 1978 the Relays are cancelled due to 22 inches of rain that week …New urethane track installed for the ’79 Relays and Mark Anderson of Mt. SAC scores 7555 in a decathlon win…  In ’82 there are a dozen world leading marks as Mark Anderson (Mt. SAC/UCLA) returns to his alma mater and takes the decathlon with 8,251 points …in ’84 15,000 attended…23 countries were represented…in ’85 Tom Petranoff (Palomar CC) throws the javelin 295-9 to win … in ’87 Carl Lewis, Olympic legend, had six jumps over 28 feet-best series in history…Julius Kariuki (Kenya/Riverside CC) sets a national cc record of 8:29.4 in the steeplechase in 1988 … in’90 Riverside CC’s  Nourddine Morceli (Algeria) sets a still-standing national community college 5000 record-13:25.20. / San Jose CC/UCLA alum Ato Boldon runs 9.86 at 100 meters for new meet and stadium record-in ’98 …Larry Wade, present Pasadena CC track coach and NCAA 110HH Champion at Texas A&M, wins the 1999 high hurdles in a still-standing stadium record 13.22….Dominique Arnold (Long Beach CC/Washington State/present American record-holder) wins the 2005 high hurdles in 13.35.
