A wise meet director…In 1971 the National Invitational Indoor Track Meet was skimping on their budget and decided not to spend any travel money to import 1968 Olympic 400 Champion Lee Evans (San Jose CC/San Jose State) for the 500 field. Lee called anxious to persuade the meet director.  “Bring me in and I’ll even run in the fifth lane. I won’t get in anybody’s way.”
Evans came, ran, and set a world record in the race of 54.4.
“Track and Field” by Sarah Pileggi, Sports Illustrated, 1977

Where’s my man?…  “During a community college relays at Cerritos College I remember a runner from Glendale CC finishing the second leg of a two mile relay, but no teammate was there to take the baton. He jumped off the track looking around, then quickly jumped back on the track with the baton and chased the field running the third leg, but collapsed from exhaustion at the 660 mark.”- Gordon Joyce, Kauai, Hawaii
