Also the uniform rule will be enforced. This means that all uniforms, hats,

5CTCA Convention in Las Vegas is
another big success!!
Three years ago, Coach Patrick Thiss suggested
that the annual coaches convention could be very successful if it were moved
to Las Vegas. That suggestion proved to be more than correct as for the
second year in a row the convention attracted a record number coaches and
their families from around the state. Along with the regular set of
meetings, the Hall of Fame inductees banquet was held as well as the awards
ceremony for this years "Coach of the Year" awards. The 5CTCA would like
to extend a special thanks to Mondo for sponsoring this event.

5CTCA (Cross Country), Rick Anderson, gives Southern Cal Cross Country rep,
Barbara Bond, an award of appreciation for her contributions to the sport of
cross country. She will be relinquishing her duties this year. (photo

Hall of Fame inductees show off their awards. From left to right, Robin

Each of the hall of fame inductees had
remarkable careers. John Norton and Robin Paulsen were certainly no
exceptions. Below are brief bios on some of their tremendous
accomplishments over their many years of coaching.
John Norton
Mt. San Antonio College
A name synonymous with Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC), John Norton was
not only a former Community College State Championship winning athlete, but
also a State championship winning Coach and Athletic Director.
During his 33-year tenure at Mt. SAC, John touched the lives of thousands
of Mt. SAC Student/Athletes and was instrumental in 16 State Championships in
Track and Field and 6 State Championships in Cross Country. Along with Hall
of Fame Member, Don Ruh, John was heavily involved in the success of the Mt.
SAC Relays, Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational and AAF Youth Days Track and
Field Program.
During his coaching career, John coached a variety of events, producing
State Champions in nearly every event. John was named State Coach of the Year
twice in cross country and was awarded South Coast Conference Coach of the
Year numerous times. He also served our sport as the 5CTCA President and as
our COA Management Representative.
Robin Paulsen
Santa Barbara City College
In 1989, Paulsen concluded a 23-year career in the Los Angeles Unified
School District, the last 13 at Belmont H.S., by being named California Boys’
and USA Region 8 Track and Field Boys’ Coach of the Year. He coached arguably
the best California H.S. distance runner in history, Roman Gomez, 2x State
Champion in the 1600-3200 (1984-85). Gomez’s success at 1985 L.A. City
Championships (victories in the 800-1600-3200) provided Belmont the
championship and also resulted in Paulsen being chosen L.A. City Boys’ Track
Coach of the Year.
In 1989, Paulsen began his career at SBCC by hosting the California
Community College State Track Meet. In 2003, he finished his career by hosting
the same State Meet. In between, Santa Barbara became the site for 3 WSC
Championships, 2 So Cal Championships, 5 SoCal Hep/Dec Championships, and the
famed Easter Relays. Paulsen’s teams produced a number of state champions,
including Anthony Vega’s 23-foot javelin victory in the ‘95 State Meet. During
his 14-year tenure, SBCC’s athletes re-wrote the college’s Top Ten List (146
spots- 13 school records).
He was the Equipment Supervisor at the ‘84 Olympic Trials and Games,
wrote 7 track articles for Scholastic Coach, and spoke at numerous clinics,
including the Stovall All-Sports Clinic (the first high school coach chosen to
do that in track and field), the AAF/CIF Cross Country and Track Clinics, and
clinics in New Mexico and Arizona.
